Belitung is a small island in the Indonesian archipelago. The story begins with the first day of school. In a run-down Islamic elementary school, at least ten students have to register or the institution will be closed down. The movie follows the “rainbow warriors,“ a small enclave of first-graders, for a period of five years and, at the same time, it portrays the struggle for the right to make one's dreams a reality. This movie was one of the biggest successes in the history of Indonesian film.

Beginning in September 2010 and continuing until February 2011, the Filmmuseum will feature a series of 20 films from various genres which will take their audiences into the most remote regions of the Islamic world. The films to be shown couldn’t be more diverse and together form a cinematic kaleidoscope that addresses ongoing political tensions and themes such as modernisation, globalisation, violence and perceived departures from tradition, the power of reason, and life and poetry in our contemporary global world.
